WHAT IS A FILM SIDES? (In the Entertainment industry.)

WHAT IS A FILM SIDES?

Sides are a breakdown of the days shooting schedule. Usually produced and handed out by the production office the day or night before the scheduled shoot. Giving the crew and talent a heads up for the next day’s call. The production office and line producer work with the 1st AD to determine any changes on the call sheet and schedule. This is particularly important for the cast as it gives them time to rehearse their lines and role.

Sides are a great tool. On set they serve as a constant reference point for both actors and crew, containing all the information relevant to the day’s shoot – especially the script pages for each scene on the schedule. You’ll find them folded up in everyone’s pocket, piled high on every available surface, and serving as coasters for the never-ending supply of coffee cups.

Sides are small, pocket-sized scripts that contain only the scenes that production is shooting on that day. They are usually a half page in size (2 pages of script printed onto one, and cut with scissors or a paper cutter) and stapled together for easy access.

Because scripts don't always come in perfect page counts, or maybe you are not shooting a full scene in one day, sometimes parts of scenes you are not shooting will be printed in the sides. New scenes should be designated with a horizontal line, and if they are not being shot that day, crossed out diagonally.

Production should make new sides each production day. You don't want the crew fumbling around trying to find a copy of the script in the middle of a shoot!
