WHAT IS A PROP WAREHOUSE? (In the Entertainment industry.)

WHAT IS A PROP WAREHOUSE?

A prop warehouse can be a one stop shopping event that can, in many cases that save time and money. Whether creating a prop or hunting for your item the endeavor can be time consuming and costly. There are many components to making a movie, but few are as important as a film’s props. But when a movie production ends, where do those props go?

Most of them are stored in massive warehouses, where they’re counted and cataloged according to type and era, and await their next big movie role. Seeing inside these warehouses is utterly surreal, and for movie geeks, it’s like walking around in a virtual museum of awesome.

A prop (or “property”) is anything an actor touches during a film, from a paper clip to a grand piano. Every item in the warehouse is separately identified, barcoded and catalogued. People searching for props for a production can easily find what they want from among the hundreds of thousands of items available.

Serving the theatrical, TV and movie industry, prop houses are one-stop shops for manifesting every director’s wildest dreams. Need a stuffed bobcat? You got it. Looking to transform your set into sixteenth-century India? Look no further. How about enough weaponry to equip a battalion for war? You’ve come to the right place. Prop houses are crucial for supplying the production needs of every film you’ve ever seen. Unfortunately, unless you’re in showbiz, there’s very little reason or opportunity to see firsthand these unusual warehouses filled to the rafters with exotic wares.
