WHAT IS AN UNDERSTUDY IN A FILM
AND STAGE? (In the Entertainment industry.)
What is an understudy in a film and state?
Understudy is normally used on Broadway and stage. An
understudy is an individual who has a small part in a show and will only step
up to the role that they’re understudying if the main performer cannot perform
for any reason. This actor has a small part in the play and steps up to a lead
role if the lead gets sick or cannot perform.
An understudy is an actor, usually one who already has
their own track (usually in the ensemble or a supporting track; i.e. during a
regular performance they will perform on their own track), who also covers
supporting/lead tracks. Unlike standbys, understudies can (and often do)
simultaneously understudy (cover for) multiple tracks; generally, standbys will
only cover one. If a lead calls out and there is no standby for the track, the
understudy is first in line to cover the role; if there is a standby, though,
they’re usually bumped to second in line with the standby, obviously, first
In addition, some productions may have multiple
understudies for a role and/or ‘rank’ their understudies in order of priority -
for instance, a production might have a first understudy, who’s first in line
to go on if the lead calls out, and a second understudy if both the lead and
the first understudy call out.
For stage understudy is usually an ensemble member who
learns a specific role(s) in case of something happening to one of the lead
performers.
