What is a Photodouble in a film?

Photodouble- An actor who resembles a principal actor who is used to perform on camera in place of that person.

Basically, a Photodouble is someone who bears a striking resemblance to the actor for whom they are doubling. They match hair color, body type, eye color, weight, etc. From a distance, a viewer may think it is the same person as the main actor. Often used in long-shots, back of head shots, or getting in and out of a car.

The Photodouble is a person who works in the movie or television production industry. Body doubles can be models that act in scenes that actors or actresses do not want to do. For example, body doubles sometimes act in love scenes or scenes of nudity, where a person's body is shown.

A production scene Photodouble portrays a double of the lead actor for the director. A double will be seen on camera during the movie. Some of these many double-acted scenes could be long or wide establishing shots, complicated over-the-shoulder main lead actor's dialogue sequences or in quick insert close-up shots involving only showing actor's body parts.

A Photodouble must be able to recite his lines with the same timing as the lead actor, and also reproduce the exact physical actions in co-ordination with the other principal actors; usually, body-doubles must be of the same approximate height and weight of the actor they're replacing.

The double's face is usually not seen on-camera, particularly when they don't facially resemble the actor; a wig will usually be employed if the double's hair color is different from that of the main actor.

An extensively used body double, especially when used in cases where the credited actor has died, is known as a fake Shemp.

Photo Double

A photo double must resemble an actor as closely as possible in height, build, hair color, and complexion. They often need to look like they could be the actor’s twin. A photo double can be used when a principal actor is in a scene but is not the focus and is essentially functioning as a Background Actor. Since the photo double looks like the actor from a distance, they can film in the actor’s place while they prepare for other scenes.

Body Double

Body doubles can be used in instances where an actor plays two or more characters who appear in the same scene. While filming, the double will take the place of one of the characters and their face will be replaced with the actor’s in post-production.

Body doubles may also be used to replace a principal actor for nude scenes, to perform special skills, or for second unit or insert shots to free up the actor to film other scenes.

Hand Double

Hand doubles are used for shot inserts to show a character performing a skill that the principal actor can’t convincingly portray. These skills can range anywhere from playing instruments to performing (fake) surgery. Hand doubles can also be used for inserts of ordinary actions, like holding a phone or opening a door, freeing up actors to shoot other scenes.

Minor Doubles

Each state has its own strict requirements for how long minors can work and often the principal child actors have other commitments, like school, they must attend throughout the day. Movies and TV shows will consistently employ doubles for minors so production can keep filming when the child actors are not available. Minor background actors and doubles must also adhere to the child labor requirements, so depending on the child actor’s age and size, production may wish to use a double over the age of 18.
