WHAT IS A SOUND STAGE?

In common usage, a sound stage (also written soundstage) is a soundproof, hangar-like structure, building, or room, used for the production of theatrical film-making and television productions, usually located on a secured movie or television studio property.

There is a reason that it is called a "sound stage". A studio should be completely sound proof. No sound other than what is in the room can ruin a take. On location, you have to deal with "holding for a plane," strange plumbing sounds in your building, or neighbors yelling. Having control can make this department run seamlessly.

A sound stage should not be confused with a silent stage. A sound stage is sound-proofed so that sound can be recorded along with the images. The recordings are known as "production sound." A silent stage is not soundproofed, and is susceptible to outside noise interference, and so sound is not generally recorded. Because most sound in movies, including dialogue, is added in post-production, this generally means that the main difference between the two is that sound stages are used for dialogue scenes, but silent stages are not. An alternative to production sound is to record additional dialogue during post-production using a technique known as dubbing.

Its purpose and function actually goes deeper than that. A soundstage is a place built very specifically to meet those needs, so it’s much more than a large empty space. Consider the following you’ll find in a soundstage: 

• Soundproofing: Soundstages are soundproofed so that audio and dialogue can be cleanly captured without audio bleeding in from external sources…
• Space: Stage space is the second part of the equation. Soundstages will come in various sizes, but they should all be large enough to comfortably accommodate equipment, crew, and talent…
• Lighting: Good soundstages come loaded with lighting options, from pre-lit lighting grids to available on-site lights and filters for customers to use…
• Electrical & Wiring: Equipment needs to be plugged in. Good sound stages are smartly designed with electrical outlets and video feed wiring made easily accessible so gaffers can quickly and efficiently do their jobs…
