A look at Science Fiction Comedy Films.
Film science fiction or comedy science fiction is a
subgenre of soft science fiction or science fantasy that exploits the science-fiction
(SF) genre's conventions for comedic effect. Comic science fiction often mocks
or satirizes standard SF conventions - such as alien invasion of Earth,
interstellar travel, or futuristic technology. It can also satirize and
criticize present-day society.
Science fiction film (or sci-fi film) is a genre that uses
speculative, fictional science-based depictions of phenomena that are not fully
accepted by mainstream science, such as extraterrestrial lifeforms, alien
worlds, extrasensory perception and time travel, along with futuristic elements
such as spacecraft, robots, cyborgs, interstellar travel or other technologies.
Science Fiction Films are usually scientific, visionary,
comic-strip-like, and imaginative, and usually visualized through fanciful,
imaginative settings, expert film production design, advanced technology
gadgets (i.e., robots and spaceships), scientific developments, or by fantastic
special effects. Sci-fi films are complete with heroes, distant planets,
impossible quests, improbable settings, fantastic places, great dark and
shadowy villains, futuristic technology and gizmos, and unknown and
inexplicable forces. Many other SF films feature time travels or fantastic
journeys, and are set either on Earth, into outer space, or (most often) into
the future time. Quite a few examples of science-fiction cinema owe their
origins to writers Jules Verne and H.G. Wells.
Science Fiction comedies include: Abbott and Costello Meet
the Invisible Man (1951), Have Rocket, Will Travel (1959), The Absent-Minded
Professor (1961), Barbarella (1968). The Computer Wore Tennis Shoes (1969), Sleeper
(1973), Young Frankenstein (1974), Dark Star (1974), Attack of the Killer
Tomatoes (1978), Time Bandits (1981), Repo Man (1984), Night of the Comet
(1984), Ghostbusters (1984), Back to the Future (1985), Short Circuit (1986), Coneheads (1993), Mars
Attacks! (1996), Men in Black (1997), My Favorite Martian (1999), Galaxy Quest
(1999), Paul (2011), Guardians of the Galaxy (2014),
