LETHA HOSTED A TIERHOEK WINE AND KAAPSE LIQUEURS TASTING AT THE STELLENBOSCH SLOW MARKET / South Africa
Letha gave a wine tasting of the signature line of Tierhoek fine wines and Kaapse Liqueurs at the Stellenbosch Slow Market last Saturday May 11th. The event started off slow but drew quite a crowd of regulars and tourists about half way in the market. The Stellenbosch Slow Market always provides the opportunity to taste the best and finest wines of South Africa.
The popular Stellenbosch Slow Market at the historical Oude Libertas is the leading gourmet food market in the Cape, open EVERY SATURDAY 9:00-14:00, and come rain or shine. In the surrounds of the Cape Winelands, you will be greeted with fresh country air, a spacious oak-lined piazza and vineyards, the perfect setting to showcase this authentic Slow Food market. This community hotspot also offers regular workshops, food and wine pairings, artisan courses and themed food events back dropped to the sounds of leading performing arts at the Oude Libertas Amphitheatre. Added value is the monthly The Treasury Market which will be selling a gorgeous selection of hand-picked goods, handmade with care and passion. This collective is drawn from the Cape’s top emerging fashion and accessory designers as well as members from local community-based projects. The focus is on people from diverse social, economic, and cultural backgrounds to the independent entrepreneur and all other individuals that believes in the equality of creativeness and the importance and pleasure of work.
Tierhoek Wines
Tierhoek was established as a farm in 1886 and is one of the oldest surviving, original Sandveld farms on the West Coast of Africa. This 715ha farm was owned by the Marais family from 1886 to 2001, and is presently owned by Tony and Shelly Sandell.
The Sandells have restored the derelict buildings back into their original Sandveld style, including an old horse mill and horse cart saddlery. A cellar is also being built to accommodate for the 20ha of newly planted vines.
Wine
Tierhoek is ideally suited for vineyards. The unique climate, soils and aspect all allow for premium wines that are characterized by intense fruit flavors, backed by subtle mineralogy and fresh acidity.
The flagship is the Chenin Blanc made from low yielding 30 year old trellised vines, which are barrel fermented in French Oak to express the full flavors of this variety, while maintaining complexity and elegance.
Some of these Chenin Blanc grapes are naturally dried off the vine for several weeks then barrel fermented in French Oak to produce Tierhoek straw wine.
Not to be outdone, the Sauvignon Blanc (unwooded) and Grenache Noir are some of the finest examples of their kind in South Africa. All the Tierhoek wines benefit from ageing in the bottle.
Kaapse Liqueurs
Artisan, Local and Natural
The driving force behind the company is the passion, hard work and expertise of Cape Town born and bred Carol Mills. It is through her efforts that the liqueurs have remained artisan, local and natural.
Based in the Western Cape, the business has been built on the very popular “market industry” which has taken off in the area. The casual nature of this phenomenon has allowed for extensive interaction with customers and generated very positive reaction and feedback.
Traditional liqueurs like Kaapse Liqueurs can enhance lifestyles, forming part of the celebration of relationships, get-togethers and festive community eating. Food pairings are a passion of the brands and the sensory experiences which can be created with the liqueurs are endless.
