LETHA MALAN OELZ HOSTED A TASTING OF TIERHOEK WINE AT WINE CONCEPTS / Newlands, South Africa
Letha hosted both the signature lines of Tierhoek Wines at the premier Wine Concepts in Newlands.
Tierhoek flagship is the Chenin Blanc made from low yielding 30 year old trellised vines, which are barrel fermented in French Oak to express the full flavors of this variety, while maintaining complexity and elegance.
About Wine Concepts
The Wine Concepts founding members shared a passion for wine, and after having being awarded contracts to design and supply wines for two of South Africa’s most prestigious establishments in 1998, Wine Concepts was born.
Our first retail store, based in Cape Towns’ famous Castle of Good Hope, was opened in 1999. From these humble beginnings Wine Concepts has evolved into a customer focused boutique wine company occupying successful retail stores in Newlands and Kloof Street, Cape Town. Our professional team have a combined knowledge and experience of many years in the South African wine industry.
Wine Concepts concentrates on discovering wines that not only deliver quality but value too. We particularly seek those examples that are handcrafted, iconic, every day and personal. As such we have a varied selection from famous South African stalwarts to little undiscovered Garagiste examples. In short a wine for everyone, whether a passionate collector or more casual everyday enjoyment.
Besides our wine selection we stock a range of craft beers, craft gins, fine whiskeys as well as other popular and rare spirits.
Wine Concepts Newlands
The Newlands store is conveniently located in the vibey Newlands village. Founder and owner, Mike Bampfield-Duggan, along with his team, Renette, David and Karen are readily available to guide your wine choice or entertain you with a story about the wines you love most.
The shop boasts an impressive selection of top South African wines, conveniently arranged by varietal. We also stock a selection of spirits and beers, along with a range of international wines with a special interest in French Champagne.
We host daily in store tastings and four annual wine festivals, with opportunities to meet the people behind the brands and to try the wines before you buy.

Mondays to Friday from 4pm till 7pm.

Tierhoek Wines
Tierhoek was established as a farm in 1886 and is one of the oldest surviving, original Sandveld farms on the West Coast of Africa. This 715ha farm was owned by the Marais family from 1886 to 2001, and is presently owned by Tony and Shelly Sandell.
The Sandells have restored the derelict buildings back into their original Sandveld style, including an old horse mill and horse cart saddlery. A cellar is also being built to accommodate for the 20ha of newly planted vines.
Wine
Tierhoek is ideally suited for vineyards. The unique climate, soils and aspect all allow for premium wines that are characterized by intense fruit flavors, backed by subtle mineralogy and fresh acidity.
The flagship is the Chenin Blanc made from low yielding 30 year old trellised vines, which are barrel fermented in French Oak to express the full flavors of this variety, while maintaining complexity and elegance.
Some of these Chenin Blanc grapes are naturally dried off the vine for several weeks then barrel fermented in French Oak to produce Tierhoek straw wine.
Not to be outdone, the Sauvignon Blanc (unwooded) and Grenache Noir are some of the finest examples of their kind in South Africa. All the Tierhoek wines benefit from ageing in the bottle.
