"Flattening of affect" refers to a constricted
or completely blunted emotional response to a situation that would otherwise
illicit a strong emotional response. Psychologists typically use this term in
reference to the schizophrenic mind's tendency to display inappropriate
emotional reactions to various stimuli, and it is not to be confused with the
low emotional energy of a depressed mind.
Blunted affect is a lack of affect more severe than
restricted or constricted affect, but less severe than flat or flattened
affect. "The difference between flat and blunted affect is in degree. A
person with flat affect has no or nearly no emotional expression. He or she may

A person with blunted affect, on the other hand, has a significantly reduced
intensity in emotional expression".
